It is already a reality: the Mobile World Congressthe most important telephony fair of the year, will continue to be held in the city of Barcelonaat least until the year 2030.
The GSMA, organizing company of the eventhas announced its commitment to Barcelona for the next eight years, ensuring that the location is a crucial element that has made the MWC a must attend event within the global mobile ecosystem.
The Mobile World Congress will stay in Barcelona for the next eight years
The MWC landed in Barcelona in 2006, and since then, the Catalan capital has been the venue for the most important telephony and consumer electronics fair in the world. Despite the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the 2020 edition, and to the decaffeinated celebration of the 2021 edition, the MWC 2022 returned to the city with a bang, with more than 60,000 attendees from all over the world.
John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA Limited, has assured that “Barcelona is much more than the city where the MWC is held”and that the city “is an intricate part of what the GSMA wants to create” through its landmark event.
“Recent global circumstances have created some of the most difficult challenges we have faced with the MWC, and the strength of our partnership with Host City Parties was a critical element in us being able to bring the show back. In fact, Barcelona is so embedded in the MWC experience that it’s hard for me to think of one and not the other” – Mats Granryd, GSMA Director General
The agreement thus ends the rumors that suggested a possible transfer of the mobile world congress to another city, either inside or outside of Spain. Barcelona will be, at least until 2030, the official venue of the most important telephony congress in the world.
